GuardrailPolicy
apiVersion:
agents.ctxmesh.ai/v1beta1· Kind:GuardrailPolicy· Scope: Namespaced · shortName:gp
Overview
Section titled “Overview”A GuardrailPolicy is a namespaced, reusable content-governance policy referenced by
AgentDeployment.spec.guardrailPolicyRef. It configures deterministic PII scanning, pattern-based
deny lists, an optional LLM-judge layer, per-user (on-behalf-of) rate limits, and an opt-in streaming
mode. Enforcement point: the launcher / guardrail sidecar, which intercepts model input/output at
inference time. The headline guarantee is fail-closed: failMode: closed (the default) denies the
request if the engine cannot run, and a missing/invalid guardrailPolicyRef holds the referencing
agent Ready=False. Every layer is optional; omitting a section means that layer is not enforced.
When to use / when not
Section titled “When to use / when not”- Use to strip/redact PII, block known jailbreak or off-topic patterns, and rate-limit abusive end-users — authored once, referenced by many agents.
- Use the semantic judge for fuzzy classification you can’t express as a regex (adds latency + cost).
- Not a defense against novel attacks — the pattern denylist matches listed patterns only, and the LLM judge is never the basis of any fail-closed guarantee (that is always the deterministic engine).
Spec fields
Section titled “Spec fields”| Field | Type | Required | Default | Description |
|---|---|---|---|---|
spec.failMode |
string (enum) | No | closed |
Behavior when the engine cannot run. closed denies; open allows through (choose only when availability must beat enforcement). |
spec.piiDetectors |
object | No | — | Deterministic PII scanning. |
spec.piiDetectors.builtIns |
*bool | No | true |
Enable the built-in detectors (email, US SSN, API keys/tokens). |
spec.piiDetectors.custom |
[]object | No | — | Named RE2 detectors on top of the built-ins. Max 32. Patterns are compiled by the controller, not at admission. |
spec.piiDetectors.custom[].name |
string | Yes (per item) | — | Detector name (appears in redaction markers, e.g. [REDACTED:badge-number]). MinLength 1. |
spec.piiDetectors.custom[].pattern |
string | Yes (per item) | — | RE2 regex. 1–512 chars. |
spec.piiDetectors.action |
string (enum) | No | redact |
Action on detection: block / redact / auditOnly. |
spec.piiDetectors.appliesTo |
string (enum) | No | all |
Direction(s) scanned: input / output / toolOutput / all. |
spec.patternDenylist |
[]object | No | — | Tripwire deny list of RE2 patterns (known jailbreak/topic patterns). Max 128. |
spec.patternDenylist[].name |
string | Yes (per item) | — | Rule name (in logs/audit events). MinLength 1. |
spec.patternDenylist[].pattern |
string | Yes (per item) | — | RE2 regex. 1–512 chars. |
spec.patternDenylist[].action |
string (enum) | No | block |
block / redact / auditOnly. |
spec.patternDenylist[].appliesTo |
string (enum) | No | all |
input / output / toolOutput / all. |
spec.semanticJudge |
object | No | — | Optional LLM-judge classification layer (calls a model — latency + cost). Off by default. |
spec.semanticJudge.enabled |
bool | No | false |
Turn on the judge layer. |
spec.semanticJudge.modelRoute |
string | No | — | The (small/cheap) gateway ModelRoute name used for classification. |
spec.semanticJudge.policy |
string | No | — | Natural-language classification prompt (what to flag). |
spec.semanticJudge.action |
string (enum) | No | block |
Action when the judge flags: block / auditOnly. |
spec.semanticJudge.appliesTo |
string (enum) | No | output |
input / output / toolOutput / all. |
spec.semanticJudge.failMode |
string (enum) | No | open |
What happens when the judge itself errors/times out: open allows (preserves the judge’s fail-open contract); closed blocks. Distinct from spec.failMode. |
spec.userRateLimit |
object | No | — | Per-end-user (OBO) rate/abuse limits, enforced at the OBO identity boundary. |
spec.userRateLimit.requestsPerMinute |
int32 | No | 0 |
Max requests/minute per end-user. 0 = unlimited. Minimum 0. |
spec.userRateLimit.spendUSD |
string | No | — | Monthly per-user cost cap, exact decimal string e.g. 5.00. |
spec.userRateLimit.maxInFlight |
int32 | No | 0 |
Max concurrent in-flight requests per end-user. 0 = unlimited. Minimum 0. |
spec.streaming |
object | No | — | Opt the guarded agent into streaming (SSE) responses under a weaker span-suppression guarantee. |
spec.streaming.mode |
string (enum) | No | Disabled |
Disabled (buffered-only) or Enabled (span-suppression streaming, applied only when the policy is provably stream-safe). |
By default a guarded agent is buffered-only: a stream: true request is refused
(guardrail_streaming_unsupported). Streaming is granted only when streaming.mode: Enabled AND the
policy is provably stream-safe (every output detector is a bounded-length, content-consuming match and
there is no semanticJudge).
Status
Section titled “Status”| Field | Type | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
status.conditions |
[]Condition | Reconciliation state. Validated is True when all RE2 patterns compile; Invalid when one or more are malformed. |
status.referencingAgents |
[]string | AgentDeployments (same namespace) referencing this policy — surfaced for drift detection. |
status.policyHash |
string | Hash of the applied policy config, updated on each successful reconcile. |
status.observedGeneration |
int64 | .metadata.generation last fully reconciled. |
status.streaming |
object | The effective streaming decision (nil until first reconcile). |
status.streaming.effectiveMode |
string (enum) | Streaming or Buffered — computed by the same shared decision the launcher enforces. |
status.streaming.window |
int32 | Rolling hold-window (runes) the streaming scanner requires (max output-detector match length). 0 when buffered. |
status.streaming.reason |
string | Explains the effective mode — especially why a streaming opt-in was downgraded to buffered. |
